Who sleeps with me.

Pretend to be asleep while looking at the inside of the eyelids, wondering why so red. I find you coming inside the room. It could be anybody, as I pretend to sleep in a public space. You are standing there looking at me. My closed eyes they start to annoy me by being nervous. Now no pink cheeks: I am occupied with not letting too much blood collect there. You will remain standing if I remain pretending to be asleep. So no opening my eyes to not let you go. You know that i don’t sleep and that I know that you are looking at me. I know that you know that.

Freeze the moment of your disco-adventure: with spare / room and DJ gunship collider.

Rumor has it that after the drying of the vodka- bottles which are placed in the middle of the dance floor, the two interior- lookalikes will be freed of being stuck in the moment. The audience does their best to make them move on.

Time passes invisibly and the disco balls in the kangaroo bag are being changed, empty vodka bottles find their way inside and a cigarette is exchanged.

How to distract these, I mean this?

ku proudly presents a buffet with fortune cookies, lizhi, tea eggs and surprising rice balls.

„Eat something although you have no idea who could be inside.“, tells you one of the fortune cookies. This advice could be helpful both in China and at this exhibition buffet. The series of photos titled ku on the wall facing the buffet hunters is promoting the handmade food.

Fortune cookies say that…

…placing the chopsticks crossed next to you symbolizes that you are criticizing a Cantonese eater joining your dinner.

…impaling the rice ball with one chopstick show your murderous thoughts concerning a Cantonese person sitting next to you.

…placing the chopsticks with the head pointing at you could make your Cantonese food hunter fellows think that you are egocentric and stubborn.

The audience is being invited to an exhibition opening in the ‘Raum mit Aussicht’ in Linz.

Passing by the art space, all that people see are two lonely bread rolls filled with slices of Italian sausage placed on a plastic foil on the floor. Following the foil, the visitors find two workers in the courtyard preparing the bread rolls and placing them neatly next to each other on the plastic foil.

After finishing their activity, the bread rolls are being accepted as a buffet and find their way to the exhibition space. Using their hands and stomaches the audience moves the assembly line and transports the food through the buildings.

A!

2015

Julie Flohr, Michael Starmayr, Katharina Zanon

live-performance

Donaustrände, Linz

17 min

A! is nothing but powerful action. The first possible thinkable form of acoustic protest, screaming violently, is used by humans immediately after birth. Spare / room uses the archaic voicemash to connect two riversides of the Danube. A! is a performance during an exhibition opening which is taking place on a ship landing on the opposite side of the river. For the visitors inside the ship it’s impossible to make out the persons belonging to the bloodcurdling screams- too many groups of people are gathering in the comfortable summer beach. Guys hanging out next to the members of spare / room are experiencing a contrasting situation: three young people scream in a comfortably seated position in the grass. The longer they scream, the less they control their voices. The scream stays alive for 17 minutes without any peaceful breaks.

spare / room

founded 2014

The members of the performance group spare / room Julie Flohr, Michael Starmayr and Katharina Zanon linger in the field between room and place. Using frame and movement, they release time from its sequences.

In the artworks stare / room, Z and ZZspare / room is focusing on the reactions on concentrated non-reacting. The contrasting performance A! adds a vividly uncomfortable form of opposition  to the peaceful environment.
